Georgetown Steam Plant 1

This is one of the passages at the Georgetown Steam Plant Museum in Seattle, WA. I went there for the first time this Saturday. They have an open house every second Saturday of the month, where they bring coffee and donuts and basically let you wander around the old steam plant, and even up onto the catwalks.

The guide looked as if he’d been around since the plant was in its prime. Since it was my first time there, I asked him if it was okay to just wander around by myself. He mumbled something, but never did give me a straight answer. He did call out “don’t touch anything!” as I walked away.

I was awestruck by the textures, and how the sunlight tried to creep into the dark interior. You’re not allowed to bring in a tripod, so I had to hand-hold the camera. My wide lens came in extremely handy.

The plant is definitely worth a return visit.

Haven’t done a portrait in a while, so I decided to do one for practice. This is my friend Jianna in front of one of the walls in my condo. There are two kick lights to either side of her, behind and high, ring flash in front.

Basil Buds Buddy!

I managed to kill four separate rosemary plants, and I suppose this says something about how nurturing I am. You can imaging my surprise when these buds appeared on my basil plant, which is harder to grow than rosemary.

Actually, I could care less about basil. I picked up an EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM macro lens and just needed something convenient on which to test it. I love the creamy bokeh. What do you think?

Yep, this is the recipe from the movie, as far as I can tell. The only difference is that I added a little pasta.

This is my attempt at a Dave Hill style photograph. It’s not quite there yet. I think I need to move the main light to the left, and the kick light further behind the model to get that sharp edge light. Also, perhaps a more interesting background; maybe one shot separately and composited in. Also, dark, shiny clothing. Finally, a ring flash. Yeah, that’s what I need. A ring flash.
